Consultative Approaches: Lessons from the Philosophical Legacy of Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, Erich Fromm, and the work of Patrick Trottier

Author: Dr. Justine Chinoperekweyi

The working article is premised on the philosophical and theoretical legacy of Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, Erich Fromm, and the work of Patrick Trottier. I highlight their approaches to consultation and how they inform the practice of Organization Development (OD) today and in the future. OD & Change literature indicates four main consultative approaches available to an OD & Change practitioner (Trottier, 2012). These approaches are useful in addressing ‘situational fit’ in one’s approaches to consultation. These four approaches are: 1) Expert Consulting (this is not an OD approach), 2) Medical (Doctor-Patient) Approach (this is not an OD approach), 3) Process Consultation (Traditional OD), and 4) Emergent Approach (Emergent OD®). I also invite other OD scholar-practitioners to contribute in expanding this thought-piece and mapping the emerging and foundational OD concepts into some form of a mapped or networked domain.
